AREAS()

Returns the number of separate ranges (areas) contained in a reference.

AREAS(reference)

AREAS counts how many distinct, non-contiguous ranges make up a reference. A normal single range like A1:B10 is one area; a reference built by unioning multiple ranges with commas, such as (A1:B2,D1:D2), is two areas.

This function is rarely needed in everyday formulas, since most references point to a single contiguous range, but it's occasionally used in diagnostic formulas or advanced named-range logic that needs to confirm how many pieces a reference is made of.

When typing a multi-area reference directly into a formula, it must be wrapped in an extra set of parentheses, as in AREAS((A1:B2,D1:D2)), or Excel treats the comma as separating function arguments instead of building a union.
