02Intermediate

Custom sort orders

Sort months, priorities, departments, or any business-specific sequence.

QUICK NOTES
  • Data > Sort > Order > Custom List includes month names and weekdays built in, so 'Jan, Feb, Mar...' sorts correctly instead of alphabetically.
  • File > Options > Advanced > Edit Custom Lists lets you define your own sequence (e.g. Low/Medium/High priority) once and reuse it in every sort.
  • A custom list sort still requires picking that list explicitly in the Sort dialog each time -- it isn't applied automatically.
03Intermediate

Advanced Filter

Use criteria ranges to filter records, extract lists, and create unique outputs.

Grouping and outline views

Collapse sections, group detail rows, and make large worksheets easier to scan.

QUICK NOTES
  • Select the rows to collapse, then Data > Group (or Shift+Alt+Right Arrow) adds the +/- outline control in the margin.
  • Data > Subtotal on a sorted range can auto-group and outline by category in one step, without manually selecting each section.
  • Groups can nest -- a detail group inside a bigger section group -- letting a large sheet collapse down to just top-level totals.
