QUICK NOTES

Give each category's option list a named range that exactly matches the category name (spaces replaced with underscores).
The second dropdown's Data Validation source formula is =INDIRECT(first_cell_reference), which resolves to whichever named range matches the first choice.
If the second dropdown shows an error instead of a list, the most common cause is a named range whose name doesn't exactly match the first dropdown's selected text.

03Intermediate

Custom validation formulas

Use formulas to allow only valid dates, codes, lengths, ranges, or business rules.

QUICK NOTES

Data Validation > Custom accepts any formula that evaluates to TRUE for a valid entry and FALSE otherwise -- e.g. =AND(LEN(A1)=6, ISNUMBER(VALUE(A1))) for a 6-digit code.
Test the formula in a spare cell first and confirm it returns TRUE/FALSE the way expected -- debugging inside the Data Validation dialog itself is much harder.
Custom validation only checks new entries by default; run Data > Data Validation > Circle Invalid Data afterward to catch anything already in the range.

04Beginner

Input messages and error alerts

Guide users with clear prompts and friendly error messages before mistakes spread.

QUICK NOTES

Data > Data Validation > Input Message shows a tooltip before someone types, so add guidance there instead of a separate instructions cell.
Set the Error Alert style to 'Stop' for hard requirements and 'Warning' when an override with confirmation should be allowed.
Write error messages in plain language ('Enter a date after today') rather than Excel's generic default text.
