CHOOSE()
Returns a value from a list based on an index number.
CHOOSE(index_num, value1, [value2], ...)CHOOSE picks one value from up to 254 options based on index_num. An index of 1 returns value1, 2 returns value2, and so on.
It is most useful for translating a numeric code (1, 2, 3) into a label, a range reference, or a formula result — without a lookup table.
A common pattern is wrapping CHOOSE around a MATCH result to make INDEX work across non-adjacent columns that cannot form a contiguous range.
Arguments
- index_num
- A number from 1 to 254 that selects which value to return.
- value1
- The value to return when index_num is 1. Can be a value, cell reference, or formula.
- value2, ...optional
- Additional values for index_num 2, 3, and so on. Up to 254 total.
