CLEAN()

Text

Strips the 32 non-printable control characters that often arrive with imported or pasted text.

CLEAN(text)

CLEAN removes the non-printable ASCII control characters (character codes 0-31) from a text string — the invisible line breaks, tabs, and control codes that often ride along with data copied from PDFs, older systems, or web pages.

It does not remove ordinary spaces or extra spacing between words; pair it with TRIM for text that needs both kinds of cleanup: =TRIM(CLEAN(A2)).

CLEAN cannot remove a non-breaking space (character code 160), a common reason cleaned text still fails to match in a lookup — SUBSTITUTE that character out separately.
