FV()

Financial

Calculates the future value of an investment based on a constant interest rate and regular payments.

FV(rate, nper, pmt, [pv], [type])

FV projects what a series of regular deposits (or an existing lump sum, or both) will grow to after a set number of periods at a fixed interest rate. It's the mirror image of PV, which works backward from a future goal to today's value.

Following Excel's cash-flow sign convention, pmt (and pv, if supplied) should be entered as negative numbers when money is being paid out or invested, since that's cash leaving your hands; the FV result then comes back positive, representing money you'll have.

rate and nper must use the same time unit -- if payments are monthly, divide an annual rate by 12 and multiply the number of years by 12, the same adjustment used with PMT.

Arguments

rate
The interest rate per period.
nper
The total number of payment periods.
pmt
The payment made each period. Entered as negative when money is being paid in.
pvoptional
The present value, or lump sum already on hand. Default is 0.
typeoptional
0 for end-of-period payments (default); 1 for beginning-of-period.

Examples

=FV(6%/12, 10*12, -200)

Saving $200 a month for 10 years at a 6% annual rate grows to about $32,776.

=FV(5%/12, 12, -100, -1000)
2279.05

Includes an existing $1,000 balance on top of 12 more monthly deposits of $100 at a 5% annual rate.
