NPV()
Calculates the net present value of a series of future cash flows at a given discount rate.
NPV(rate, value1, [value2], ...)NPV discounts a series of future cash flows back to today's value using a constant discount rate, then sums them. It's the standard way to judge whether a project's future cash inflows are worth more or less than its upfront cost.
NPV assumes the first cash flow supplied occurs one full period from now, not today. If there's an upfront cost or investment happening right now (at time zero), add it separately outside the NPV function instead of including it as the first value -- for example, =NPV(rate, year1, year2, year3) - initial_cost.
Unlike IRR, NPV requires you to supply the discount rate rather than solving for it; the two functions are often used together, since NPV can be used to sanity-check an IRR result by testing it at the company's actual cost of capital.
