RATE()
Calculates the interest rate per period of a loan or annuity.
RATE(nper, pmt, pv, [fv], [type], [guess])RATE solves for the periodic interest rate implied by a loan or annuity's payment schedule, when you already know the number of periods, the payment amount, and the present value. It's the TVM function to reach for when the rate itself is the unknown, rather than the payment or present value.
Following the standard cash-flow sign convention, pv (what you receive, like a loan) and pmt (what you pay out) usually have opposite signs; mixing up the signs is the most common reason RATE returns a #NUM! error instead of a sensible rate.
Like IRR, RATE solves iteratively starting from a guess (10% if omitted) and can fail to converge on some inputs. The result is a rate per period, so multiply a monthly result by 12 to get a nominal annual rate.

- nper
- The total number of payment periods.
- pmt
- The payment made each period.
- pv
- The present value (loan amount).
- fvoptional
- The future value after the last payment. Default is 0.
- typeoptional
- 0 for end-of-period payments (default); 1 for beginning-of-period.
- guessoptional
- A starting estimate for the rate. Default is 0.1 (10%).
