SWITCH()
Tests an expression against a list of values and returns the result for the first match.
SWITCH(expression, value1, result1, [value2, result2, ...], [default])SWITCH compares expression against value1, value2, and so on until it finds a match, then returns the corresponding result. If no match is found, it returns the default value or a #N/A error if no default is supplied.
SWITCH replaces deeply nested IFs when you are mapping one value to another: status codes to labels, month numbers to names, or rating numbers to categories. It is much easier to read than =IF(A1=1,"Jan",IF(A1=2,"Feb",IF(A1=3,"Mar",...))).
Available in Excel 2019, Excel 365, and Excel Online. Earlier versions use nested IF or CHOOSE instead.
Arguments
- expression
- The value to compare — a cell, formula, or constant.
- value1, result1
- First comparison value and its return value.
- value2, result2, ...optional
- Additional comparison/result pairs. Up to 126 pairs.
- defaultoptional
- The value to return when no match is found.
Examples
=SWITCH(A2, 1,"Low", 2,"Medium", 3,"High", "Unknown")A2 contains 2, so SWITCH returns "Medium". If A2 were 5, it returns "Unknown".
